Department of Physics

The Department of Physics is one of the most prestigious Departments of the College. It became a full fledged Department when the degree course was started in 1980. The post graduate course with specialization in Electronics was started in 2001 and the Department became an approved research centre under Mahatma Gandhi University in 2009. All teachers are well qualified and there are 3 M.Phil and 4 PhD holders. The Department is extensively using working models for class room teaching and demonstration. The Department regularly conducts workshops, seminars and is undertaking major research projects of different funding agencies and is also focusing attention on career counseling and guidance. The Department has been recognized as a Research Centre in Physics under MG University and three faculty members, Dr. Jose P. Abraham, Dr. K. P. Harikrishnan and Dr. K. Annieta Philip, are recognized Research Guides of the University. Research work is being carried out in the Department currently in the areas of Nonlinear Dynamics, Radiation Physics, Opto Electronics and Thin Films. There are two Full-Time Research Scholars in the Department working in the field of Nonlinear Dynamics and Light matter interaction. Three Major Research Projects have been completed and one major and three minor research projects are currently in progress in the Department. The faculty members have so far published 27 research papers in International Journals and several research papers presented in National/International Conferences. The Department has an active Alumni with the present Head of the Department, P. P.Saratchandran, himself being an Alumni. The Department has research collaboration with National Institutes like Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune with several research papers published in collaboration with faculty members in these Institutes in International Journals. One faculty member, K. P. Harikrishnan, is a Visiting Associate of IUCAA since 2001. The Department has also had academic collaboration with VSSC, IASc, RRCAT and CUSAT, with several students participating in activities and orientation programs conducted by these Institutes.
