Department of Commerce

The Post Graduate Department of Commerce established its Research Centre on 17th November 2005, marking a significant milestone in academic research excellence. Since its inception, the centre has been committed to fostering high-quality research and has successfully produced 44 doctoral degrees. Currently, it has four recognised research supervisors and nine research scholars actively contributing to various fields of commerce and management.
Following the Revised Guidelines of Mahatma Gandhi University, coursework classes for full-time research scholars commenced in January 2014, while part-time scholars began their coursework in April 2014. To ensure the highest research standards, the centre mandates six- monthly progress report presentations and conducts annual research methodology sessions to support scholars in refining their research skills. In addition, project-based classes are offered to undergraduate and postgraduate students, equipping them with the necessary guidance and
clarity to undertake academic research successfully.
As part of its commitment to academic excellence, the National Researchers Conference, initiated in 2010, is conducted annually. This conference serves as a platform for researchers to present their work, engage in scholarly discussions, and receive valuable feedback from expert panelists. Further strengthening its research contributions, the department launched Contemporary Commerce Review (ISSN 2319-3638), a double-blind peer-reviewed journal, in September 2012. This journal provides academicians, faculty members, research scholars, and students an opportunity to publish original research papers and insightful reviews in Commerce and Management, maintaining rigorous academic standards.
To support its research initiatives, the Research Centre provides excellent infrastructure, including a departmental library housing 2,000 academic and reference books, full-time internet access, and INFLIBNET facilities, ensuring seamless access to research materials and resources. The department remains dedicated to fostering a vibrant research culture, empowering scholars to contribute meaningfully to the academic and business community.

Department of Physics

The Department of Physics, The Cochin College, Kochi, has been recognized as a Research Centre under Mahatma Gandhi University. The research centre actively engages in cutting-edge research, fostering scientific advancements in various domains of physics. The major research laboratory within the department, Nanomaterials and Development Division, is dedicated to pioneering studies in nanotechnology and material science.

The Department of Physics received official recognition as a Research Centre under Mahatma Gandhi University as per the Sanction Order No. 3118 Ac.AVI 1 RC 2009 Acad., dated 15th July 2009. The recognition was granted following the recommendation of the Syndicate Standing Committee on Research and Development (Meeting held on 7th July 2009). The Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University, by exercising authority under Section 3.10(17) of the M.G. University Act 1985, approved the recommendation, permitting the Department of Physics to operate as a Research Centre. The research centre is authorized to admit a maximum of five (5) research scholars per supervising teacher.

The Nanomaterials and Development Division is the premier research laboratory in the Department of Physics. The lab is focused on innovative research in the field of nanotechnology, particularly in:

  • Synthesis and Characterization of Nanomaterials
  • Dielectric, Optical, and Structural Studies
  • Photocatalytic Applications for Water Purification
  • Biomedical Applications of Nanomaterials

The division is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments to facilitate high-quality research, supporting both doctoral scholars and postgraduate students.

Currently, the research centre has three (3) ongoing full-time research scholars and three (3) part-time research scholars. They have published journal papers and book chapters in international & UGC-Scopus indexed journals and have presented papers and posters in national and international conferences. The research centre actively collaborates with national institutions for advanced studies in physics and nanotechnology. The centre regularly publishes research articles in reputed journals and engages in interdisciplinary research projects. The Physics Research Centre provides advanced experimental and computational facilities, enabling scholars to carry out extensive research. The centre is also committed to providing hands-on training to students and researchers in modern scientific techniques. With an emphasis on quality research, the Department of Physics at The Cochin College aims to expand its research capabilities, attract more scholars, and contribute to the scientific community through innovative research and development.
