Department of Botany

The Department of Botany, established in 1982, started BSc. Botany (Model II) course with vocational subject Biotechnology and allied subject Biochemistry in 1998. The course is designed to train students in the frontier areas of Biotechnology, Tissue Culture, Genetic Engineering, Microbiology and Botany. The course also includes 15 days job oriented training program in Biotechnology. The Department has a herbal garden and it also maintains an organic vegetable farm.
The Department possesses infrastructure facilities for lab work in Genetic Engineering, Plant Tissue Culture, Microbiology, and General Botany. The Department has a good Botany Association

ACTIVITIES OF THE YEAR 2012-2013

 

 

Environment day celebration

Activities of Botany Department for the year 2012-2013 started with Environment Day celebrations on June 5 by planting coconut tree saplings in the college Premises which was inaugurated by Manager of The Cochin College, Sri.T Vidyasagar. Sri.Rajagopal M., Principal, teachers, nonteaching staff and students from various departments attended the programme.

The Botany Department has organized an interdepartmental ‘Debate competition’ on the topic ‘Current Environmental Crisis.’ Teachers and students of the various departments participated in the event.

Rajeev B Menon and Reiz M. Ashraf of Economics Department secured first prize and Naina Nazeer and Arsha S. Mohan of Botany Department got the second prize.

Alumni meet

Alumni of Botany Department had a get-together on 20th June 2012 at 1P.M in the Botany lab. The meeting was presided by Dr. Mini P Mathai, HOD Department of Botany; all the teaching and non teaching staff of Botany was present in lab for the get together. Cultural programmes were organized by the students of Botany Department to entertain the Alumni. All the members of alumni enjoyed the get together and took a decision to join/meet at least once a year in the Botany Department. Shri. M.Rajagopalan the Principal of The Cochin College, Smt. Subhadrammal.P, Vice Principal and Dr. M.C Dileep Kumar, HOD of Commerce Department felicitated the function.

Talk

The Department of Botany has organized a talk on ‘Oushadasasyangalum Grihavaidyavum and relevance of karkidakakanji’ by Sri.Mahesh Mangad, Director, Thapovanam on 8th August 2012 in ‘Smart Class Room’. The programme was inaugurated by Prof. M Rajagopalan, Principal, The Cochin College and presided by Dr.Mini P.Mathai, HOD, Botany Department. Vice Principal Dr.Subhadrammal felicitated the function. The class was attended by parents, students and staff of The Cochin College. Books on medicinal values of plants and karkidakakaji kits were sold out.

Freshers Day

The fresher’s day for the year 2012 was held on 17-8-2012 in the Department. The function started at 10.30A.M and was presided by Dr.Mini P Mathai, HOD, Department of Botany. All the teachers of Department of Botany, nonteaching staff and the students of Botany were assembled in the Botany lab for function. The celebration started by a prayer song then the HOD addressed the gathering. This was followed by a variety of entertainment programmes by the students.

Onam Celebration

Onam-2012 was celebrated on 23-08-2012 with a get-together and traditional onam ‘Sadhya’ with pappadam, pazham and payasam. Students of the Department participated in the interdepartmental pookkalam competition and won second prize. The Department appreciated the students for their enthusiasm for participating in competitions and successful conduct of the event.

Christmas celebration

The Christmas celebration for the year 2012 was held on 21-12-2012. The celebration started by a prayer song then the HOD addressed the gathering. This was followed by variety of entertainments by the students including X’mas carol songs. At 1.30 P.M the lunch was served and celebration came to an end by 3P.M

Botany Fest

The Department has organized a Botany Fest on 8th March 2013. The programme was aimed at encouraging and bringing out the hidden talents in students. Various cultural competitions were held. The function started at 10A.M and the Fest was presided by the Dr.Mini P Mathai, HOD, Department of Botany. All the teachers of the Botany Department, non teaching staff and students were assembled in the BSc Botany lab for the entertainment programme.

The Botany Department has also organized an intradepartmental Quiz competition. Anand N. and Vimal Joseph of Botany Department secured the first prize and shyamlal K.S and ShijoP.J got the second prize.

 

Farewell

The farewell for the final year students were held on 15th March 2013. Cultural programmes and games were conducted by the juniors. Anand P.S of III B.Sc Botany was elected as the best outgoing student and was awarded the trophy on the same day.

Talk

A talk was conducted on “Essential Thoughts for Health, Happiness and Expansion” by Sri. G. Devan, Principal, Saraswathi Vidyanikethan, Elamakkara on 10th April 2013 at the Smart Class room. The session includes both the practical and theory classes. Staff and students of Cochin College were benefited by the Class.

Environment Day Celebration

Activities of Botany Department for the year 2013-2014 were started with Environment Day Celebrations. The Department has organized a poster presentation competition on the topic Environment conservation. Mary Anu of III B.Sc Zoology secured the first Prize. Naina Nazeer of III B.Sc Botany and Ancy Evelyn D’cruz of I M.Sc Mathematics secured the 2nd and 3rd Prizes respectively.

Alumni Meet

An Alumni Meet of Botany Department was conducted on 21st December 2013. The meeting was presided by .Dr.Mini P. Mathai, HOD, Department of Botany. The Principal Dr. Jose P Abraham and former Principal Prof. M. Rajagopalan felicitated the function.

National Seminar

In connection with the ‘World Mountains Day’ the Department of Botany organized a National Seminar on ‘Mountains- the repository of Biodiversity’ on Dec 16th, in association with Department of Forest and Wild Life, Govt. of Kerala. The venue was the seminar hall of The Cochin College. The programme was presided over by The Cochin College Principal Dr. Jose P Abraham and inaugurated by the honorable MLA Sri. Dominic Presentation. The resource persons were Dr. Ravichandran P., Associate Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu and Dr. M.K. Prasad, Former Pro-Vice Chancellor, Calicut University, Kerala. Teachers and students from various colleges were participated.

 

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT

 

The Department of Botany named its ‘Community Extension Programme’ as ‘Knowledge for Health and Wealth’. Two talks and one workshop were organized for the house wives and public. The lecture series was inaugurated by Honorouble MLA of Ernakulam, Sri. Hibi Eden. The topics covered were listed below:

 

  1. Workshop on ‘Mushroom Cultivation’ was conducted on December 11th, 2013. The workshop was conducted by Smt. Shanty Joseph, a successful farmer and mushroom cultivator. The participants were house wives, teachers, students and other interested people of the society. The meeting was presided by Dr. Jose P. Abraham, Principal of The Cochin College.

  2. A class on ‘Orchid cultivation’ was conducted by Sri. Jacob Varghese, Associate Professor, Department of Botany, S H College, Thevara on 30-01-2014 for the public. The meeting was presided by Dr. Jose P. Abraham, Principal of The Cochin College.


 

  1. A talk on ‘Cancer-Facts and Myths’ by Dr. V.P. Gangadharan, a well known Oncologist was conducted on 19-02-2014. The meeting was presided by Sri. T. Vidyasagar, Manager of The Cochin College.

  1. A book ‘Pazhangal - Azhakinum Aarogyathinum’ coauthored by Dr. Mini P Mathai was published on 10th December 2013 by H&C Publishers, Thrissur, The book was released by Honourable Chief Justice of High Court of Kerala, Justice Manjusha Chellur by handing over the first copy to The Cochin College Principal, Dr. Jose P Abraham.

6. Pravin Antony of I B.Sc Botany won the Title Mr. Ernakulam Sub-junior in the district body building championship conducted by fitness beach on 22nd December 2013

7. Pravin Antony of I B.Sc Botany won the Title Mr. Kerala Sub-junior organized by Kerala Body Building Association on 19th January 2014.

8. Maria Juviann Isaacs and Reyginia P Tennyson of I B.Sc Botany secured second prize for Quiz competition and Maria Juviann Isaacs, Sneha B and Reyginia P Tennyson won third prize for ‘Ad Zap’, the French fest conducted at St.Terasa’s College, Ernakulam.

 

ACTIVITIES OF THE YEAR 2014-2015

 

DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY

 

1. Environment Day celebrations

Activities of Department of Botany for the year 2014-2015 were started with Environment Day Celebrations on 5th June 2014. Neem sapling was planted in the college campus by the Principal Dr. Jose P Abraham. Dr. Mini P. Mathai, HOD of Department of Botany conveyed the motto of Environment Day ‘raise your voice not the sea level’. Teaching and non teaching staff participated in the function.


 

A debate competition on the topic ‘keedanashinikalude nirodhanam paristhithi santhulanathinu anivaryamo’ for the students was conducted in connection with the Environment Day celebration. Students from various departments participated. Hajara A. and Anjitha Prem O., from II B.Sc chemistry secured first prize. Gokuldhas from III B.Com and Neha Omgy from III B.Sc Botany secured the second prize.


 

2. Wetland Day Celebrations

  1. A Speech competition was organized in connection with Wetland Day on 2nd February 2015 on the topic ‘Conservation of Wetlands for our future’. Maria Juviann Isaacs of II B.Sc Botany won the first prize and Neha Omgy of III B.Sc Botany and Jemi Sosa of II B.Sc Botany shared the second prize.

 

  1. A photography competition was also held in connection with Wetland Day on the topic ‘Wetlands in your area’. Akhil K.S of III B.Sc Botany and Shivakrishnan K. of I B.Sc Botany won the first and second prizes respectively.

  1. Sugandhawadi Project

Department of Botany started ‘Sugandhawadi’ project of Spices Board, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Govt. of India. The project aims to create an awareness about spices among students. The inaugural function was held on 5th February 2015 by planting the sapling of nutmeg by the Manager of ‘The Cochin College’ , Sri.T Vidyasagar. Principal of the college Dr. Jose P. Abraham was also planted a nutmeg seedling. Vice Principal, Dr. K. R Jaya, HOD of Botany Department Dr. Mini P. Mathai, teaching , nonteaching and students of Botany Department attended the function. PTA vice president Sri.V. P. Joy was also present during the occasion.


 

 

  1. Nakshthravanam

Department of Botany in association with Wildlife and Forest Department, Govt. of Kerala has initiated a project to establish a Nakshathravanam in the college campus.


 

  1. State Level Seminar

One day state level seminar on ‘Biotechnology and Bioinformatics’ was organized by the Department on 16th February 2015.The seminar was inaugurated by The Cochin College Principal Dr. Jose P Abraham. Dr. Suprabha G Nair, Assistant Professor in Botany welcomed the gathering. Miss Anjali Premraj of III B.Sc Botany delivered vote of thanks. Teachers and students from various departments were attended the seminar.

Resource person for the first session was Dr. Linu Mathew, Assistant Professor in Biotechnology, School of Biosciences, M.G University and the topic was Bioinformatics and more importance was given to the practical aspects of bioinformatics.

COMMUNITY EXTENSION PROGRAMMES OF THE DEPARTMENT

In connection with the community extension programme of the Department of Botany viz., ‘Knowledge for health and wealth’ the Department conducted a lecture on the topic ‘Karkidakathile Arogyasamrakshanam’ by Sri.Mahesh Mangad, Director, Thapovanam, on 25th July 2014. The programme was inaugurated by former HOD of Post Graduate and Research Department of Botany, Sacred Heart College, Thevara, Dr.V. J. Dominic. Books on medicinal values of plants and karkidakakanji kits were sold out.

 

 

  1. Second event of the community extension programme of the Department of Botany, named ‘Knowledge for health and wealth’, was a class on soap making for Kudumbasree unit members, house wives, teachers and students on 20th February 2015 by Sri. Ramesh S. The session was inaugurated by Dr. Mini P. Mathai, HOD, Department of Botany. The class was interesting and informative. Soap making kits were also distributed at the end of the class.

 

 

  1. Third event of the community extension programme of the DBotanyepartment of Botany, named ‘Knowledge for health and wealth’, a class on yoga was conducted on 21st February 2015 by Mrs. Meera Praseet, Yoga Instructor, S.H CMI Public School, Thevara for students and house wives.

DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY

World Environment Day Celebrations

The Department of Botany has celebrated the Environment Day on June 5th 2015 in association with the Department of Zoology by conducting a debate and collage competition for the students of the college.

ii) In connection with World Environment Day, the Head of the Department of Botany, Dr.Mini P.Mathai, was invited as Chief Guest for the Environment Day Celebrations on 5-6-2015 in Our Lady’s Girls Higher Secondary School, Thoppumpady

iii) The Department of Botany in Association with NSS of The Cochin College celebrated the World Environment Day by planting tree saplings by Principal, Dr Jose P. Abraham and Vice principal Dr. K. R. Jaya

Class on Biotechnology

A class on ‘Basics of Biotechnology’ was conducted for plus two students of nearby higher secondary schools on 24th, 25th, 26th and 30th of November 2015. The students and teachers from Santa Cruz H.S.S., The Delta Study and Edward Memorial Government H.S.S were participated. A demonstration of experiments and equipments in Biotechnology lab was also given by the final B. Sc. Botany students. The students visited the Spices garden and Nakshathravanam. A class on economic importance of spices was also given to the students.

 

Jaivasamrudhi

The Department of Botany has initiated a new venture named ‘Jaivasamrudhi’ for the distribution of vegetable seedlings to students and teachers to promote the setting up of organic vegetable garden in the houses of students and staffs of the Cochin College. Sale of the seedlings was inaugurated by Dr. Jose P. Abraham, Principal, The Cochin College on 18th January 2016.

 

WORLD WETLAND DAY

 

The Department has celebrated the World Wetland Day on 2nd February 2016 by conducting poster making competition on the topic ‘Conservation of wetlands for future’ for the students of the college.

EXTENSION

An awareness programme on organic and terrace farming by Sri. Jacob Varghese, Associate professor, Department of Botany Bharath matha college was organized by the Department for the community of Cherlai division of Cochin corporation and members of kudumbasree on February 3rd 2016 as a part of our extension programme ‘Knowledge for Health and Wealth’ part 7 in Koovappadam community centre. Corporation councilor of the division Smt. Syamala Prabhu inaugurated the programme. Representatives of nearby residence associations, anganawadi teachers and students participated in the programme.

CANCER DAY

An awareness programme in connection with World Cancer Day was conducted in the college and Edward Memorial Government. as a part of our extension programme ‘Knowledge for Health and Wealth’ part 7 High School, Veli, Fort Cochin, on 4th February by the students and teachers of Botany Department with the help of placards. Dr. Mini P. Mathai, HOD Botany spoke to students regarding this. A flash mob was also conducted in this occasion in the college.

 

 

BOTANY ASSOCIATION INAUGURATION

 

The Botany Association was inaugurated on 5th February 2016 by Sri. V. J. Antony, Rtd. Profeesor of Physics Department. Dr. K.R. ACTIVITIES OF THE YEAR 2016-2017

 

Environment Day Celebration and planting and distribution of saplings.

 

The Department of Botany celebrated the environmental day on 6th June 2016 with the presence of the chief guest, the IPS officer Smt. Nishanthini K( SP vigilance and anti-corruption). The principal, the teachers, students and non teaching staff of The Cochin College participated in the program. The seedlings collected from the forest department were distributed to the department heads and is planted in the college campus. The program was followed by an informative talk delivered by Smt. Nishanthini K which focused on the importance of environment and the necessity of protecting it.

Nammude Bhoomi Nammude Bhavi(Our Earth Our Future)’

The Department of Botany in collaboration with the The Cochin College allumni association conducted a project viz., ‘Nammude Bhoomi Nammude Bhavi’. The project was aimed at planting of trees in the college campus and in the beach side of Fort Kochi. The program was inaugurated by Smt. Shiny Mathew, standing chair person of the Cochin Corporation on 12th June 2016. Mr. Martin , Forest Conservator, Dr. Mini P Mathai, HOD, Department of Botany, The Cochin College, Mr. Salim Kumar, President of alumini association ; Thomas Vialat, Secretary of The Cochin College alumini association spoke in the occassion. The saplings were given by Malayala Manorama. The students and the members of the alumini planted around 50 tree seedlings in the campus.

 

Oushadha Sasyangalum Ayurveda Dhinacharyakalum’ – Knowledge for Health and Wealth Part 10

As part of the community extension program of the Department, ‘Knowledge for Health and Wealth’, the department of botany organized a talk on ‘Awshadha Sasyangalum Ayurveda Dhinacharyakalum’. The manager of the Cochin College Sri. T. Vidyasagar was the president of the function. Dr. Siri Sooraj B.A.M.S (M.D) was the resource person. Kudumbasree members and members of the nearest residential association from our adopted ward took part in the function. Teachers and students from other departments also took part in the function.

 

 

Talk on Climate Action Day – Climate Change and Waste Management

As part of the International Climate Action Day, The Department of Botany organized a talk on 26/10/2016 on ‘Climate Change and Waste Management’. Dr. C. M Joy, retired Associate Professor, Sacred Hearts College, Thevara was the resource person. The principal of the Cochin College Dr. Jose P. Abraham was the president of the function. The faculties and students from other departments of the college attended the talk. The talk was informative as well as an eye opener towards the global issues affecting climate change and the after effects.

Biotechnology Class for +2 students

Classes on ‘Basics of Biotechnology’ were conducted for plus two students of nearby higher secondary schools on 31st November 2016. The students and teachers from The Delta Study, Fort Kochi and T. D. H. S. S, Mattenchery attended the classes. A demonstration of experiments and equipments in Biotechnology lab were also done by the second and final year B. Sc. Botany students.
