Department of French (Aided)

The Department of French at Cochin College was started in 1980, under mounting pressure from the student community for a third option for second language, besides Hindi and Malayalam. The motivation underlying this seemed to be the desire to learn a foreign language which would open up new vistas for them, as well as hiking their general score. Kochi being strategically situated as a hub of tourism, commerce-to say nothing of the growing hospitality industry, this choice appears to be quite justified as knowledge of the French language in these areas is of tremendous significance. In fact in Ernakulam, there are only three colleges offering French as second language under the Mahatma Gandhi University and The Cochin College is proud to be one of them. The Department of French was headed by Dr.Ancy Sebastian from 1980 to 2014. Dr.Somadha.R rendered her services to the department from 1982 to 2011.Ms.Janu V Kumar joined the institution in 2015 and is currently the Head of the Department of French. In order to enable the student to get a first- hand knowledge of the language and culture, we encourage our students to participate in events like French Fest, French Film festivals and fĂȘte francophone organised by the Alliance Française de Trivandrum, the French language and cultural centre of Kerala. Over these years the number of students opting French as second language has increased as we have a well structured and concise programme for each semester.

Vision

The Department of French aspires to provide the students linguistic competency, cultural literacy, writing and speaking skills and thereby offer them the additional advantage of learning a foreign language.

Mission

The Department of French intends to enable the students to study a modern foreign language, right from the basics and to develop systematically, their oral, written and comprehensive skills so as to prepare them to eventually take the DELF/DALF examination.
