The Post Graduate and Research Department of Commerce, with its roots dating back to 1967, the year of inception of the college, started with two batches of Pre-degree. The demand for a Commerce college was huge in the western part of Kochi, which was a prominent centre of business and trade amongst the various communities. The need culminated in the form of Department of Commerce of The Cochin College. The Department offers some of the best academic resources for excellence, be it by way of faculty, infrastructure, library and technology. The Department was upgraded to an Undergraduate Department in the year 1973, Post Graduate Department in 1995 and to Research Centre in the year 2005.the Department offers two Undergraduate prograamesB.Com (Finance), B.COM (Marketing) and two Post Graduate Programmes M.Com finance and Master of Commerce and Management.Further, B.Com (Computer Applications) and B.Com (Finance & Taxation) & BBA was added in 2015 and 2016 respectively in the self-financing stream.
The Research Centre of the Department is one of the recognized centre of M.G University to offer PhD with course work. The Research Department is a fully fledged Department withfiverecognised research supervisors of Mahatma Gandhi University. Presently there are 14 research scholars and over the span of sixteen years 40 scholars have been awarded Ph.D degree.We have the distinction of having produced the highest number of Ph.D’s under M.G university .The Department The research centre offers state of the art facilities including access to INFLIBNET and DELNET. The Department has been conducting annually its flagship programme - Researcher’s Conference on the lines of a National Webinar. The Department also publishes double blind peer reviewed yearly journal with an ISSN- Contemporary Commerce Review and its own newsletter- Varttikam.
The concept of parallel education runs deep in our curriculum and we regularly organize seminars, conferences, study tours and other academic activities to achieve this end. The students of the Department secure high pass percentage in the university examinations and prides in producing a plethora of toppers in the university examinations year after year, in both B.Com and M.Com programmes. The faculty of the Department are active participants in various webinars and conferences conducted at various parts of our country and are pursuing research.
The excellent performance of students in their projects awaken the interest of the industrial sector for financing their further study. Social outreach and interaction programme is part and parcel of the departmental activities where by special care and concern is given right from grass root levels. The Department of Commerce has evolved itself over the years and retains its prestigious position as the foremost of the institutions in Commerce education in this part of Ernakulam. The Department was first headed by Prof. Andrews Mooken with a succession list of eminent and capable teachers, the list running the names of Dr. S.Venugopal, Prof N.P Raveendran, Prof. Dr. M.C. Dileep Kumar, Dr.K.R.Jaya ,Dr.C.A. Geetha. and Dr.M.Geetha.The department is firm on its path to attain holistic development of students to prepare them for a career in the global arena.
