Department of Botany (Aided)

The Department of Botany was established in 1968 to teach Biology for Pre-Degree Course students. Subsequently in 1982, teaching Botany as a subsidiary subject for B.Sc. Zoology was started. A full-fledged undergraduate programme in Botany (Model II) with Biotechnology as vocational subject and Biochemistry as complementary subject was started on 1st January 1999. Besides core and complementary Botany courses, the Department offers Agri-based Microenterprises as open course and Agri-business as choice-based course. Now the Department also offers an add-on course on Floristry and Flower Arrangement. As part of the curriculum, students undertake “On the Job Training (OJT)/Hands On Training (HOT)” in nearby industries. Study tours for final year students and field trips for I and II year students are regularly conducted by the Department. Department has a Botany Lab, a Biotechnology Lab and a Tissue Culture Lab. Department maintains an herbal garden contains different verities of medicinal plants and herbs. Department also has a ‘Nakshathravanam’ and a ‘Spice Garden’.

Vision

Our vision is to create understanding of diverse world of plants and their vital role in the ecosystem and generate appreciation of plant life and their significance in sustaining life on Earth. The course aims to equip students with the necessary skills for successful careers in academia, industry, government, and non-profit organizations. It offers opportunities for internships, research projects, and collaborations, enabling students to gain practical experience and develop professional networks in the field of botany.

Mission

Our Mission is to disseminate knowledge which is student-centred and job oriented, nurture creativity, interpersonal skills and social commitment, provide systematic study, experimentation and job oriented higher education. The mission involves studying plant structure, physiology, genetics, taxonomy, ecology, conservation of biodiversity and other areas of plant science. The Programme provides students with a comprehensive education in plant biology, encompassing theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and research experience. The course seeks to nurture students' ability to think critically, analyse scientific information, and apply problem-solving skills to address challenges in the field of Botany. It encourages students to develop a scientific mindset, engage in hands-on laboratory and fieldwork. The course instils a sense of responsibility and appreciation for the environment. Students are encouraged to understand the importance of plants in maintaining ecological balance, addressing climate change, and conserving biodiversity.
